Capacitor Colour Code Lookup
Select four colour bands to calculate a capacitor value in pF, nF or µF, including the minimum and maximum values for the selected tolerance.
Calculated capacitance
How the calculation works
The first two bands are significant digits. The third band multiplies that number to give a capacitance in picofarads (pF). The fourth band supplies a percentage tolerance.
Digit colours: Black 0, Brown 1, Red 2, Orange 3, Yellow 4, Green 5, Blue 6, Violet 7, Grey 8, White 9.
Multiplier examples: Silver 0.01, Gold 0.1, Black 1, Brown 10, Red 100, Orange 1,000, Yellow 10,000.
Unit conversion: 1 nF = 1,000 pF; 1 µF = 1,000 nF = 1,000,000 pF.
Check the actual part: This calculator retains the colour and tolerance assignments from the original tool. Vintage capacitors, including striped film and mica types, do not all use the same marking system. On some parts a band may represent voltage rating or another characteristic rather than tolerance. Check the manufacturer's code before relying on the result.
