Sola Sound: Tone Bender MKII Professional Hybrid, 0.15" Vero Layout

This hybrid Tone Bender MKII is a more budget conscious offering from Sola Sound (Macari's) via David Main of D*A*M and it uses NPN transistors, which is a bit of a bonus.

Watch out for the hard to spot cuts under the 470 ohm and 100 ohm resistors.

  1. Hi, I tried to build this but couldn't get no signal. I wonder if I can substitute those transistors with bc108 or bc109?

    1. Hello - I'd double check the board before changing anything. Specifically do you have the cut under the 470 ohm resistor on row 3 (between the 8k2 and 15n cap).

Using a BC108 or 109 as the silicon transistor is fine.

Are you able to check voltages or signal trace the board?

    2. I tried to signal trace the board but could not get very far with it. Signal gets lost somewhere after Q1 and before Q2. And after Q1 it sounds farty and sqeals like pig :D I changed those caps (100nf and 180pf) but it made no difference.

    3. OK - farty and squeals like a pig is not a good sign. You have something really fundamentally wrong. Without seeing it or looking at voltages, there's not much to go on.

What transistor are you using for Q1? Message a few photos to me on instagram and I'll have a look.
