RADIO & HOBBIES: An Amplifier for a Guitar, 1954

This is a 12w DIY valve guitar amplifier project published in Radio and Hobbies (December 1954), specifically designed to suit the growing popularity of electric guitars.  Apparently they were right, more amplifiers would be needed in future.

Looks interesting, except for the volume pot being first in the signal chain.  That's not ideal - I had a Goldentone amp like this once, and it's not the best design in terms of input impedance etc.

Tubes Used:

  • EF86: First preamp stage.

  • 12AX7: Phase inverter and second gain stage.

  • 2 × 6BW6: Power output stage (class AB1 push-pull).

  • 5Y3-GT: Rectifier.
