DEAD ASTRONAUT: Xfuzz, Point to Point Layout

This is a very simple little circuit from Dead Astronaut, which has a little bit of Big Muff happening in the clipping section on Q2.  Maybe not enough to tag it as being in the Big Muff family, it's certainly a second cousin.

While it might be simple, the Dead Astronaut X Fuzz is a fierce little fuzz.

Here's the thread on DIY Stompboxes

  1. If this is too nasaly sounding with stock cap values, what do you thinnk would be a good way to make the sound more full?

  2. Hi is this work on bass too?

  3. Hi. Do I need replace some capacitor for bass guitar?

    1. Definitely have to increase the 10n on the input to something bigger, and the 100n on the output. The 470n linking the two transistors is probably big enough.

The 1u in the clipping section with the LEDs controls how much bass is clipped. It may actually be too big, depending on what kind of sound you want - clipping too much low end, which doesn’t always work well on bass.

I’ll test it on LTspice and get back to you. Maybe use 470n for input and output?

    2. Ok - I had a quick look. Firstly, building point to point is a bad idea if you are unsure of values. I’d recommend breadboarding before committing to point to point.

So with that out of the way, I’d use 4.7u caps for everything except the 1u in the clipping section. That seems to retain a fair bit of the lows.

    3. Hi andy. so I need replace the 10nf, 100nf and 470nf to 4.u? and let the 1uf on the clipping side?

    6. All good - hope it does what you want it to do with the larger caps.
