DEATH BY AUDIO: Interstellar Overdriver, Point to Point Layout

The Interstellar Overdriver is possibly the only normal pedal Death By Audio makes, and it's not challenging to get to work either.  Some are a nightmare.

Sorry about the weird layout with the dual 100k gain pot - there isn't one in DIY Layout Creator, so had to make it work as best I could.  Hope that makes sense...   you can always cross check with s schematic on the web.

If you don't have a dual 100k pot, try it with a regular pot, as gain-b isn't essential to get a sound out of this.

I also dropped a germanium transistor in as Q2 once, and it sounded pretty interesting.

  2. Hello - first off thanks for the blog / site - it's super interesting and informative.

I'm sure you're crazy busy so feel free to ignore this (basically I know you're not tech support!

I wouldn't normally ask... but I've built this circuit 3 or four times now (yours and another example I found) and I can't get it to work... I built a fuzz war... all good and few other things but this one just beats me and I'm going insane!!!

I know it's super hard to trouble shoot from pics but if there was anything obvious I'm doing dumb or any advice that you be much appreciated!

    1. Ah – you’re not going to love this. It’s actually pretty easy to spot from the photos. You’ve built it on regular vero board with conductive strips, but this layout is designed for point-to-point wiring, which has conductive tracks.

    2. Ah! You're right not quite the answer I was after... but at least I know I'm not going mad... I'm just a dummy :) I shall have another go and thanks for the reply.

    3. I wouldn't recomend a point to point build - go for a standard vero layout. Point to point is tricky and if you make mistakes it's hard to fix. I know some people like them, but I'd avoid transistor sockets if you can. I had nothing but trouble with them when I started making pedals.

    4. Yea - I hear you. Just rebuilt a vero layout and got it working. - and also on the sockets - I've tried them a couple of times and I don't trust them, that was the last time... I think their a waste of time and another thing to fail! Thanks again. M

    5. Good to hear you got it working. I've never managed to cook a transistor with too much heat from soldering, but I have had a lot of problems with sockets.
