PETE CORNISH: Buffer

Just a little Cornish buffer that I use for buffered bypass / Pete Cornish builds.  It's small enough to sneak in at the bottom of an enclosure below the foot switch or standing upright against the side.

I sometimes add an extra row for additional power filtering - for the circuit that it's buffering, and there's still just enough room to fit a LED resistor on the board (will need an extra cut, and maybe relocate the diode - I'm sure you will work it out).

UNIVOX: Super Fuzz, Notch Filter Mod

This is a handy little mod for the Univox Super Fuzz - especially for those who always leave the tone switch on the notch setting.

Instead of a tone switch, there's a pot from the 100n capacitor to ground in the bridged-t notch filter, so the amount of notch can be dialled in.  If you really want to, you can have almost no notch...  but why???

I usually like to include an octave pot in my builds, but I decided to keep the knob count down on this one.  Easy enough to add; there's space for this if you want to add it.

UNIVOX SUPER FUZZ - ON THE BENCH

I used a few old transistors for low gain and a Motorola dual transistor for the long-tailed pair.  The diodes are Soviet-era D9B, not that it makes much difference on a Super Fuzz (they don't really do much).

I intentionally made a few resistors standing to leave room around the many 10uf capacitors and the sizeable dual transistor.  2 x 47uf capacitors have been used instead of the usual 100uf on the power filter, as the 100uf was too cramped.

PETE CORNISH: NG-3 Fuzz

This has now been traced by Aion FX - it turns out the NG-3 is very different to the NG-2.  Miles apart...

While this still makes for a decent fuzz, it's NOT a NG-3.  Layouts have been removed for this reason.

Here's the link to the trace

The Pete Cornish NG-3 is pretty much the NG-2 with the trimmer to bias the last stage placed externally - which is a great addition, even if the knob count starts to get a little high.

The front end is the first section of the Cornish G-2 (a low-gain Big Muff with germanium diodes), and the last stage is a Fuzz Face variant.

This should be built with the usual Cornish buffer, running buffered bypass.  Hardly the end of the world if you opt to use a standard unbuffered true bypass.

As I've never seen a schematic for the NG-3, this is my work-a-like.  I've used a 25k pot as the bias pot in my builds, as I preferred the range.  I have had someone else say that they preferred the 50k, and another used a 20k pot without issues.  Either way, it's best to have a low-value resistor at the end of the range to stop the circuit from completely turning off - I use 4k7 for this, 8.5k has also been reported as a good value.

MXR: Distortion +

Something of a classic and many other designs are based on the MXR Distortion + so no real need for an introduction.

DISTORTION PLUS ANALYSIS

There's an excellent analysis of the Distortion + here on Electrosmash including a schematic (be prepared for some maths)

Note that I have used alternate pot values, compared to some of the schematics out there.   There’s evidence to support this on DIY Stompboxes.

ECHOPLEX: EP-3 Preamp, Point to Point Layout

This is one of the first circuits I ever built due to the simplicity, and it's hard to go past as a simple boost with a bit of fattening up of the signal.

The Echoplex EP-3 preamp doesn't provide tons of gain, but it does work very nicely as a slight boost, or as an always on type effect.   I plan on adapting this to be the front section of a Valve Caster, to provide some extra grit.

I used the Aion Electronics schematic, as I like the idea of the fat switch, but I did not include the volume control or output buffer.  Pretty easy to add a volume control, I'm sure anyone reading this knows how.

ZVEX: Octane 2

There's always room for one more Super Fuzz - this time, it's the Zvex Octane 2, which is a Super Fuzz with a simplified boost stage, and the notch filter can also be adjusted - probably more of a filter depth control than a tone control as such, but that's just what Zvex called it.

A Super Fuzz usually has a 2k2 resistor to ground from the emitters of the long-tailed pair instead of the 1k as listed on this layout.  If you have issues with biasing, try a 2k2 in this position.

As always, here's a larger-than-necessary vero layout.
