The first version of the Death By Audio Fuzz War is notoriously tricky to clone - this is the second version, which is a modded Jumbo Tone Bender with a tweaked tone stack. So, in other words, it's a modded Big Muff.

Hey there, just got this build up. worked as a charm with one strange thing... I am not getting any volume when all up (volume all open). It gets really low volume. Any tips on what I might have done wrong? Besides that, all working great .
ReplyDeleteHello - yes that is unusual. Do you have a multimeter to check voltages, and an audio probe to follow the signal path?
DeleteI’m thinking if it sounds right, but it’s not loud look at the output stage.
Possible problems:
Is the output transistor the right way around? It’s flipped compared to the rest.
Is there any chance you used a 22k resistor on the emitter instead of a 2.2k ?
And of course never rule out a dodgy pot, or not so great soldering somewhere.
Tks for the fast reply, with your help I found my mistake!
ReplyDeleteI did go thru your tips one by one and my mistake was the wiring on the pot. As I was replacing it, I thought it was strange and did came back to double check. I guess sometimes it is on where you are most confident you cannot make a mistake. In the end, new pot, new transistor and LOUD sound! This is an amazing pedal. Thank you!
Will try the 7 transistors soon
Happy to help, and glad that it’s now working properly. I haven’t built the 7 transistor version yet. I hear it can be hard to get working.
DeleteI would like to know the exact legend for all the electronic components...I can't find it anywhere! thank you for your reply ;)
ReplyDeleteIf you click on the link to the schematic, the document has a list of all components with quantities listed. Hope this helps.
DeleteThanks Andy, I saw this, I will do like that.
