HUDSON: Sidecar Overdrive

I did a layout for the Hudson Sidecar a couple of years ago, and I retraced my steps recently and found a few things that needed to be updated.  The Sidecar is a progression of the 999 Overdrive, which is Hudson's version of a 'green box' overdrive, made for people like me that don't like the green box.

There's also another variation out there called the Motorcycle, which sounds like the same circuit that's been retuned for a bit more low drive, with the addition of an output transformer, not unlike the Broadcast.  My guess is the 470n / 1k off the inverted input stage has been adjusted, maybe a tweak to the bass side of the active eq???.

Plenty of great pics on FSB  Schematic on PedalPCB

The layout below should be pretty close to a version of the original from 2017.   0.15" vero, so a tin can IC is a must.

HUDSON SIDECAR - VERO LAYOUT (ORIGINAL)

Note that there are minor variations out there, depending on how Hudson was making them at the time.

  1. Hey there, I was just checking the layout as I am considering rebuilding mine with the bigger vero. I think there might be two little mistakes in the layout.
    1. On the top left there is a capacitor missing. Check this picture as a comparison: https://www.freestompboxes.org/download/file.php?id=36767&mode=view

    2. On right (the capacitor with the unknown value) the capacitor doesn't exist. Just put 0r resistor is one to the right: https://www.freestompboxes.org/download/file.php?id=36780&t=1

    3. I think the clipping section is different in the original or did you rearrange them?: https://www.freestompboxes.org/download/file.php?id=36779&mode=view

Question: What is the advantage of 0r resistors?

    1. Hello - have a look at the photo that I just uploaded. There are different versions out there and note the values of the capacitors around the top left, and have a look at the cap on the right.

It was a long time ago - I don't recall making any changes to clipping.

Zero resistance is zero resistance - there is no advantage on a vero board. In automated manufacturing processes, a 0 ohm resistor might be used to replace another value resistor, as the machine is set-up for installing components, not jumpers.

  2. And I was wondering, you wouldn't want to make a layout of the Motorcycle, would you?: https://joespedals.com/cdn/shop/files/HudsonMotorcycle_1024x.jpg?v=1700928205

    1. Hello again - not unless a schematic pops up somewhere, same for the AP

    2. I see what I kind find out. What fascinates me is that already in 2022 he was planing to implement a transformer at some point: https://www.freestompboxes.org/download/file.php?id=42676&mode=view

  3. And while we are at it, please also the Hudson Broadcast AP-II :-D :
